about

Trombonist/Composer Alex Asher lives in Brooklyn, NY and is quickly making a name for himself as a force in the New York music scene.

Alex performs over two hundred times a year in an eclectic array of musical styles. He leads People’s Champs, a new group which mixes experimental rock and soul with African and Latin beats. Look out for the People’s Champs debut EP, dropping Summer 2011.

Alex and his long time horn crew, The Superpower Horns, are also a house horn section for legendary Roc-a-Fella Records, and in the last year collaborated with many of Hip Hop’s finest, including Curren$y, Jean Grae, Mos Def, Devin the Dude and notable producer Ski Beatz.

In addition, Alex performs regularly with many groups around New York including Meta and the Cornerstones (African Reggae), Slavic Soul Party! (Balkan Brass), Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra (Indie Rock/Salsa), Bill Lee’s Natural Spiritual Orchestra (Notable jazz bassist/composer Bill Lee is also Spike Lee’s father), and Jo-Jo Kuo’s Afrobeat Collective (Legendary drummer Jo-Jo Kuo was once a member of Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80). He’s also performed with Kenny Wolleson, Josh Roseman, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Charlie Persip’s Supersound, and others.

From 2005-2009, Alex was a member of The Superpowers (originally named The Boston Afrobeat Society), winners of the 2007 Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll and the 2006 Boston Music Awards for Best World Music Act. The Superpowers recorded two albums, Revival Time (2007) and Trance for Nation (2008) which featured vocalists from legendary Senegalese group Orchestra Baobob. They also toured internationally, playing sold-out venues while spreading an environmental message in a veggie-oil powered bus.

Alex has toured throughout the United States and Europe, playing shows in Berlin, DE; Paris, FR; London and Oxford, UK; multiple dates in The Netherlands, including the North Sea Jazz Festival; and at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Montreux, Switzerland. He’s also played at traditional Irish jam sessions throughout Ireland, jammed with Roma brass musicians in rural Serbia and paraded at Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Also an avid writer, Alex has penned press releases for ECM Records and news briefs for JazzTimes Magazine.

Alex has been privileged enough to study with Robin Eubanks, Bob Brookmeyer, Charlie Banacos, Frank Carlberg, James DeSano and Norman Bolter. He holds a B.M. and a B.A. from Oberlin College and a M.M. from New England Conservatory. He is on the music faculty at the Lycee Francais de New York, where he directs the Band, teaches music classes and offers private instruction on brass instruments.
